Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins was at it again this weekend in Major League Soccer (MLS) action, scoring a goal for the Seattle Sounders in their 3-2 defeat to the Columbus Crew.

His strike partnership with US international Clint Dempsey was on show once again, with both attackers getting on the score sheet, but it was not enough to earn any points in the encounter.

Martins scored the second goal for the Sounders in the 75th minute, after Dempsey’s earlier strike, but two goals from Kei Kamara and one from Federico Higuain deflated the club from Seattle.

Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid can be proud of his Nigerian striker, who has raised his tally to seven goals thus far in the season.

The 30-year-old former Newcastle United, Levante and Inter Milan player has been in excellent form for his US club from Washington, and continues to make a strong case for his return to the Super Eagles setup.

With 18 goals for the Nigeria national team in 39 appearances, Martins has an impressive record for the Super Eagles, but coach Stephen Keshi does not seem to be convinced by the player.

Martins played for Nigeria at the 2006, 2008 and 2010 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, as well as the 2010 World Cup.

The Sounders find themselves third in the MLS Western Conference with 16 points from nine matches. The first six teams in each Conference progress to the playoffs.
