Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh has admitted that he is bitterly disappointed with the fact that his side failed to progress from the group stages of the 2016 African Nations Championship in Rwanda.
The Nigerians required a draw from their final group game against Guinea to earn a place in the quarter-finals, but they could only manage a 1-0 defeat, and were knocked out as a result.
The Super Eagles won their first match of the campaign 4-1 against Niger before a 1-1 draw with Tunisia, leaving them needing to hold the Guinea national team to a stalemate, but it was not to be.
Speaking to the press following the loss to Guinea, Oliseh was honest about his assessment of the match, mentioning that he was disappointed, but still proud of his team.
“It’s a big disappointment, but I’m proud of my boys even though we did not go through. They gave a good image of themselves,” Oliseh said at the press conference, according to AfricanFootball.
“Somewhere inside it was difficult for the players. They have given their best, they needed that lift and they couldn’t find it then. We came out to win, but we did not play. My players are human and there is limit to what they can hold. For some morale reasons, they couldn’t fight it today,” he added.
“My players have children and families. Adult tournaments are not youth tournaments,” the coach proclaimed.
He went on to complain about the difficult conditions that he has been working under as coach of the Super Eagles.
“We are the most poorly equipped technical crew to manage Nigeria’s super Eagles since I started playing for the country. The least for what anyone can do is to be grateful for what we are doing,” argued the coach who took over the Eagles in July 2015. I’m coaching Nigeria and if I get tired, I will leave the work,” he concluded.
